Earthtecture Sub-1 is a subterranean office building designed in 1991 by Japanese architect Shin Takamatsu. Instead of extending into the air, the building works its way into the ground. From the outside, the building looks like a garden of strange forms. Butterfly-wing-like windows at the top filter light down through its central shaft, reaching even into the lowest levels of the structure. Takamatsu designed Earthtecture Sub-1 in this manner to match the quiet aesthetic of its surrounding residential neighborhood.
