Istakhr, also spelled, Estakhr, was once a prosperous city in what is now Southwest Iran. During the 4th century B.C.E., the city was an important cultural hub for the expansive Neo-Persian Empire. Between Classical Antiquity and the 11th century C.E., a long and arduous string of conflicts between various peoples slowly ground down the city through constant sieges and pillagings. By 1074, what was once a great city had essentially become a ghost town; by the 17th century, it was completely in ruins. A few columns still stand in the field where the city once was.
